Anyone good with fixing computers?

Meghan asked in Q&A:

Call me if you know how to fix it.
I’m pretty desperate.
And excuse the spelling errors.
I’m on my mom’s computer and she has no spellcheck since her ie is so fucking out dated.

All that I know about the computer:::
I have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop…
pretty sure it’s a 64 bit operating system
[whatever that means]
It has Windows Vista Home Basic Edition
I called both Acer and Microsoft and they both sent the call to India and I got a tech that could barely speak English both times.
I called Geek Squad and they said they’ll evaluate it for 200$.
Fuck that xP

The problem::::
When I start it up, it gives me the normal, white, acer screen…then it gives me an error screen.

here’s what the error says::

Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the
cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows Installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings and then click “Next”
3. Click “Repair your computer”

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer
manufacturer for assistance.

File: ..Boot..BCD
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

I tried restarting it,
Taking the battery out and putting it back in.
I’m not dumb-this is an actual crash, not just my computer dieing

My computer updated itself the day before it crashed
[[it crashed on monday]]
It’s not going to fix itself, it already sent itself to hell.
It’s definitely not a virus, it’s probably an error from the Vista update…
fucking Vista… -.-

I tried the reboot disk- I had to be a pirate to get the software-but I got it- I’m pretty sure it’s the right one.
…anyway, I tried it.
Niki tried it too…
we both got the same result-
a black screen with a moveable cursor.

I tried pressing F8, F10, F12, F2, F300…I tried every suggestion I found online [[every suggestion that I could understand- some of them started talking about cables and I didn't even bother with them.]]

I’ve been told the same thing by Geek Squad, Acer, AND Microsoft- Start in safe mode.

Well, it’s not giving me the option to start in safe mode, hell it’s not giving me the option to start at all.

What do I do? Nothing is working and I’m getting really fucking frustraited. -.-

I had important stuff on that computer, I can’t access it…and if Vista needs to be reinstalled in my fucking computer and I loose all of that, well then so be it. I can re-download the programs I used and get the files back from my flash drive. On my mom’s computer I can’t even do that-she’s old-school and thinks anything I could possibly download would give her computer the same problem mine has which is fucking rediculous…

Anyway, if you think you know what’s wrong with it, comment this, call me, text me,
I don’t care if we were fighting, if you hate me, if you love me, if you don’t know me-somebody just help me out with this.

I know it sounds desperate
and that’s because I’m pretty desperate.
My music is on the line here….
please help.

Screw windows. You need to switch to Ubuntu. Get it at ubuntu.com and write it to disk using a .iso burner. Boot it from the live cd, open up the main hard drive and transfer any files you want to keep to a portable flash drive or hard drive. Once you do that, install ubuntu. It’s way more stable and you shouldn’t have any problems with it. Email or IM me if you have any questions. My email and YIM screen name are on my Y! answers profile.

do EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS. there is no operating system on the hard drive and you need to reinstall the windows 64 bit vista disc and as you boot uf hit F12 (on most comps) and this will take you to the boot menu. then choose “CDROM” and it will boot off the disk. install it and then you’re good as new but you probably wont have any files from before

    Anyway lets start backwards.
Last ditch option is take your laptop to a copy place (best buy does it) and ask them to copy your hard drive. If its not a hardware problem on the hard drive then they can add your drive to another computer as an additional drive and copy it over. That way you don’t loose anything. Tada. Now that you are safe lets see about your current problem.

You said you tried all the F’s. Not a single time you got a boot option?

Anyway one good option is this, use a Live CD. What a Live CD is, is basically an operating system which doesn’t need to be installed and runs directly on computer.

If you can get into bios make sure the boot order is CD first, which it is normally, unless it has been changed.

Here is the link to a Free Live CD
Here is a good article on how to do it.–rescue-files-with-a-boot-cd-192982.php

[Life Hacker generally as great articles on many things]

If the live boot cd does work, you are in luck copy what you need off.

After wards reformat the hard drive and start over, since you backed everything up you should be good to go.

You don’t necessarily have to lose your important stuff. However, it will require you to make some purchases. You will need to purchase a hard drive enclosure for laptops (check ebay to spend less money). You would have to determine if our hard drive (hd) is IDE or SATA. Once you have it, remove your hd, put it in the enclosure and hook it up to your mom’s PC via USB. It will show up like an additional drive with a drive letter. You can drag and drop your data onto the other PC for safe keeping. After you are done, put the hd back into your laptop. Boot the laptop with the Vista CD and try to select system restore. If that does not work, try reinstalling Vista WITHOUT selecting the option to format the drive. This may save your data, but it would render your apps unusable. Either way, at least your data is safe on another computer anyway. If you still encounter problems, it is for sure a hardware problem. The first two suspects would be the hard drive itself or the memory. If it is the system board…well, that is a major problem and an expensive one.
