becks asked in Q&A:
Last night when shutting down my PC, the system turn off red button had an update that could be installed upon shut down. I selected yes, shutdown & install updates as i normally do when the automatic updates icon appears. However today upon my PC staring up I now have a Microsoft Genuine Advantage Notifications Wizard box which gives a next or cancel option. What is this? I googled it and it seems to be a Microsoft piracy software prevention tool but I see that many posts show that this causes unjustified pop ups stating that you may be running pirated software etc. I paid for and had my Windows XP Pro installed on my PC after a Windows crash nearly a year ago at a computer shop and have never had any issues using Windows on my PC since. My question is… should I go ahead and continue with the install wizard for this or just keep canceling & closing it out? I canceled it out and rebooted but it still comes up when Windows starts up. After I cancel it out it does not pop up when using the PC, only upon restart does it reappear.

Go ahead and let the wizard run, otherwise it will continue to pop up
WGA Validation tool will run to verify that your copy of Windows is genuine. If your copy of Windows does not pass validation, you will receive notifications the next time you restart and log on to your computer.
These notifications will inform you why your copy of Windows did not successfully complete the validation process, and give you with options for resolving the issue. If your copy of Windows is genuine, you will not receive any notifications.
If you download and install WGA Notifications for Windows XP from the Microsoft Download Center, an installation wizard will help you with the update process. This includes a review of the license terms and the option to decline the update.
When you accept the terms and installation of WGA Notifications, you will receive updates specific to the application automatically
Microsoft has had issues resolving tray notifications & actual system states for whatever reason…
Try this:
Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows Update.
When @ Microsoft Updates, click the ‘Custom’ button, not the ‘Express’.
This will give you hardware & software updates specific to your unit (hence the necessity to allow the ‘Active X’).
[Express gives Windows operating system updates]
Latest one requires a shutdown & restart.
I was a little nervous about that when it first came out, but i knew my windows was a legal OS, but , yes , to receive the windows updates, you need to run the wizzard. It is a little scary, but if you want to get important window updates, then you need to do it.
Let the wizard run it will just confirm that your copy is a proper one. If like me your are rebuil;ding your machine alot microsoft may say its not real because its been activated so many times. Just ring them up and explain they will sort you out with a new code.
If your copy of windows is bootlegged, it will shut down in 30 days, at which point you’ll need windows reinstalled.
