Will my desktop pc crash if i leave it constantly on ?

Brian asked in Q&A:

I do torrent downloading, and most people should know that you have to leave your computer on & running most of the time. But i have a little fear that my desktop pc will crash soon. Will it crash if i leave it on constantly ?

Yes, a time will arrive when there will be too much “temporary” memory stored, and eventually it will “crash”.

I don’t know. Mine hasn’t. I’ve had it for two years & I never turn it off.

Well ofcourse sooner or later it will crash, that’s what computers do :) But while a restart once week will do it good there’s not particular danger in leaving it on. In fact by leaving it on you’ll decrease wear on the components, much like with a car, startup is the worst thing you can do to your hardware.

    i found with downloading torrents
to run it for 2 hours if slow
then turn off system and then go back and do another 2 hours
And no it shouldn’t damage you system
but leaving it on all the time you memory fills up
more so if downloading making it slow………..er

honestly .. i’ve had my XPS for like 5 years now and it’s been on since I got it lol .. every couple days i restart it to refresh my RAM though .. it’s a given .. if it doesn’t bother you or you have like 8GB of RAM or something one good time a week should be ok .. shut down completely .. wait 10-15 seconds .. and boot back up .. you can do a restart if you’d like but it always seemed to me that shutting down for a few seconds was more effective

    hope this helps!

If you leave your PC on 24/7 You need to do regular maintanence on your files etc. You will need to replace your fans on your PSU, CPU,GPU and case if you have them as they do wear out faster. Other than that your PC should run with out problems.

Technically, any PC without error correcting memory WILL eventually crash from a memory error. I forget the odds, but i believe it’s something like if you left your computer on 24/7 for a month, on average you’d get one memory error per GB of RAM.

I leave my computer on all the time and it never crashes…you should be good.

As for the fans, even the worst quality fans usually last 15,000-20,000 hours before they fail…so you do the math.
